FASTag problems come in two kinds. Recharge problems happen when you add money: your bank says you paid, but the FASTag balance hasn't moved. Toll problems happen on the road: a plaza charged you twice, charged you when you paid cash, or a deduction arrived hours after you passed. They're handled by different people, so it helps to know which kind you have.
This guide covers both, using NPCI's guidance for NETC, the national electronic toll system FASTag runs on, including two rule changes from mid-2026 that affect what you see in your toll SMS.
Find your situation
Check your bank SMS or statement, your FASTag SMS, and your issuer's app or statement, then match what you see:
| What you see | What likely happened | Contact |
|---|---|---|
| Money debited, FASTag recharge failed | The payment didn't complete, or completed but wasn't credited | Your FASTag issuer bank; your bank for an unreversed debit |
| Recharge pending | The result isn't final yet | Wait, then your issuer or the app you used |
| Recharge successful, balance not updated | The credit hasn't posted yet, or went to another tag | Your FASTag issuer bank |
| Same toll charged twice | A duplicate toll transaction | Your FASTag issuer bank |
| Toll charged hours later | Often a re-initiated transaction after a technical failure | Usually nothing, if it's charged once |
| Forced to pay cash despite enough balance, or the tag wasn't read | A plaza or equipment issue | NHAI helpline 1033 |
Recharge failed but money deducted
NPCI's FASTag FAQ is direct: if you recharged, the amount was debited from your account but not credited to your FASTag, call your FASTag issuer bank's call centre and request a reversal. Have the date, amount, vehicle number and the payment reference ready: the UPI reference (12-digit RRN) or card transaction ID, and the Bharat Connect reference if you recharged through a bill payment app.
If the payment itself failed after your bank debited you, the money never reached the issuer, and your bank must reverse it under RBI's 2019 rules on failed transactions; for a UPI or card payment to a merchant, the deadline is T + 5 days, with ₹100 a day in compensation if it's late. Our guide to money debited but transaction failed has the details.
Recharge pending or not yet showing
Don't recharge again while one is pending, or you may end up topping up twice. Check your issuer's app or SMS after a few minutes. If you paid by UPI and the UPI app shows pending, our guide to UPI payment pending explains why it happens and how long it can take.
If the recharge shows successful but your FASTag balance hasn't changed, check that you paid the right tag: the vehicle number in the FASTag UPI ID or on the Bharat Connect confirmation should match yours. If it does, contact your issuer with the reference. If you recharged through a bank or UPI app using Bharat Connect, you can also complain through Bharat Connect with your 20-character transaction reference ID; our explainer on BBPS and Bharat Connect covers how.
Toll charged twice
Duplicate toll debits have been a long-standing complaint, and NPCI has added a central check. Under its June 2026 circular, NPCI scheduled a central check in the NETC system from 30 June 2026. It compares each toll debit against transactions in the previous 48 hours and declines duplicates where, compared with an earlier accepted transaction, it has:
- the same transaction ID, tag ID, plaza ID, reader read time and lane direction (any national, state or parking plaza);
- a different transaction ID but the same tag, plaza, reader read time and lane direction (any of those plazas);
- at a national plaza, the same tag and plaza within 10 minutes in a different lane direction, or within 15 minutes in the same direction.
NPCI is clear that this is a secondary control: the toll plaza's bank (the acquirer) remains primarily responsible for sending only valid, unique transactions, and must monitor for duplicates and raise credit adjustments where one gets through. If you're still charged twice for one crossing, raise it with your FASTag issuer bank, quoting both toll SMS messages (plaza name, date, time and amount). Your issuer can take it up through NETC's dispute process.
Why a toll can arrive late
Sometimes the toll SMS arrives long after you've passed the plaza. One reason is NPCI's June 2026 guidelines on transaction re-initiation: when a toll transaction fails because of network fluctuations, a site being unavailable or a component failure, banks must keep re-sending it, at 180-second intervals, until they get a success response, and must re-initiate legitimate transactions they find were declined. A late SMS for a toll you did pass, charged once, is normal. Two charges for the same crossing is the problem to raise.
Plaza problems: tag not read, or forced to pay cash
NPCI's FAQs point to NHAI's helpline for problems at the plaza itself:
- If your FASTag wasn't accepted at a plaza, or you were made to pay cash although your balance was enough, call the NHAI helpline 1033 and register a complaint.
- If the plaza's equipment isn't working and you have enough balance, NPCI's FAQ says to pay the toll in cash and register a complaint on 1033.
- If 1033 isn't reachable, NPCI's FAQ suggests your bank's call centre or emailing [email protected].
If the tag was refused because it's on an exception list (low balance, blacklist or hotlist), the fix is with your issuer, not the plaza. Our guide to FASTag blacklisted explains the categories.
How to complain, step by step
Most FASTag money problems are resolved by the issuer bank, because it holds your FASTag balance:
- Collect the details: vehicle number, tag ID if you have it, date and time, amount, toll SMS messages, and payment references for recharges.
- Call or write to your FASTag issuer bank's customer care, and note the complaint number.
- For plaza problems (tag not read, forced cash payment), call NHAI's 1033 helpline.
- If your issuer bank doesn't resolve a complaint within 30 days, or you're unhappy with its reply, you can take it to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in, since FASTag issuers are regulated banks and payment companies.
To avoid the next one, keep enough balance for your trip and recharge before you set off; our guide to FASTag recharge and balance checks covers the quickest ways.
Frequently asked questions
My FASTag recharge failed but money was deducted. What should I do?
Call your FASTag issuer bank's call centre with the payment reference and ask for a reversal, as NPCI's FAQ advises. If the payment failed at your bank's end, your bank must reverse it within RBI's deadline: T + 5 days for a UPI or card payment to a merchant.
Why was toll deducted twice from my FASTag?
Usually a duplicate transaction from the plaza's system. NPCI's central duplicate check, scheduled from 30 June 2026, declines many duplicates automatically, but if one gets through, raise it with your FASTag issuer bank, quoting both toll SMS messages.
Why did I get a FASTag toll SMS hours after crossing the plaza?
Toll transactions that fail for technical reasons are re-sent by the banks until they succeed, under NPCI's re-initiation guidelines, so a deduction can arrive late. It's only a problem if you're charged twice for one crossing.
What is the FASTag helpline number?
For problems at a toll plaza, NPCI's FAQs point to NHAI's 1033 helpline. For balance, recharge and deduction problems, contact your FASTag issuer bank's customer care.
