Payments in Latin America: Pix, SPEI and instalments

Instant bank payments have reshaped Latin American checkout. Brazil's Pix lets customers pay with an alias or a QR code at any hour, and Mexico's SPEI moves pesos between banks in near real time, every day of the year.

Local payment ecosystem

How Latin America pays

Cards remain important, often with instalments, but account-to-account payments now carry a large share of everyday commerce. Pix made paying by QR code or alias normal in Brazil; in Mexico, SPEI underpins bank transfers. Local payment methods and local acquiring matter because cross-border card payments can face lower approval and higher cost.

  • SPEI in Mexico, 24/7
  • QR and alias payments

Routing considerations

Orchestrating payments in Latin America

An orchestration layer sends each payment to an eligible provider by your rules and recent performance. In this market, these are the decisions that usually matter.
  1. Customer in Latin AmericaLocal methods and cards
  2. LILPEOne API and dashboard
  3. Routing engineRules, health, cost
  4. ProvidersServing Latin America, as connected
  5. Local railsPix, SPEI

  • Local methods first

Offer Pix or bank transfer where customers expect it; keep cards for those who prefer them.

  • Local vs cross-border acquiring

Where a local provider can process a card, compare its approval rate and cost with a cross-border route.

  • QR expiry and confirmation

Treat QR payments as pending until confirmed; don't fulfil on the redirect alone.

Integration approach

Add a market without a new integration

Your code talks to LILPE once. Markets, providers and methods are added behind that integration, where available.
  1. 01

    Tell us your markets

Where you sell, the methods customers expect and your volumes.

  2. 02

    Providers confirmed

We confirm which providers, methods and settlement options are available for your business.

  3. 03

    Integrate once

One request pattern and one webhook stream, tested in the sandbox.

  4. 04

    Go live, then expand

Adding or switching a provider needs no change to your code.

FAQ

Latin America questions

Is LILPE live in Latin America?

Which markets, providers and payment methods are available for your business is confirmed during onboarding. This page explains how payments work in Latin America and how an orchestration layer fits; it isn't a list of live LILPE connections.

How does a Pix payment work?

The payer uses the recipient's Pix key (an alias such as a phone number or email) or scans a static or dynamic QR code, and the transfer settles in seconds at any time, including non-business days.

Can LILPE settle in this market's currency?

Settlement options, including currency and destination account, are confirmed during onboarding. LILPE's global collection pages describe settlement in INR to an Indian account through cross-border providers; nothing on this page claims other settlement options.
