Payments in Europe: SEPA, instant euro payments and SCA

Across the euro area, SEPA lets a payment move between countries like a domestic one. Instant euro transfers are becoming universal under EU law, and card payments online must meet strong customer authentication rules.

How Europe pays

Cards and wallets are common online, but each country has its own favourites, often bank-based methods. SEPA credit transfers and direct debits cover the euro area, and instant transfers are now required to be available from euro-area payment providers. Strong customer authentication changes how card payments are approved and when exemptions apply.

Routing considerations

Orchestrating payments in Europe

An orchestration layer sends each payment to an eligible provider by your rules and recent performance. In this market, these are the decisions that usually matter.
  1. Customer in EuropeLocal methods and cards
  2. LILPEOne API and dashboard
  3. Routing engineRules, health, cost
  4. ProvidersServing Europe, as connected

  • Authentication-aware routing

Approval depends on how a provider handles authentication and exemptions; compare providers on that, not only on price.

  • Local methods by country

Offer the bank-based methods customers expect in each country, alongside cards.

  • Instant transfers for payouts and refunds

Use instant euro transfers where both sides support them.

Merchant use cases

Who sells and pays in Europe

  • Selling across the euro area

  • Platforms with sellers in Europe

Integration approach

Add a market without a new integration

Your code talks to LILPE once. Markets, providers and methods are added behind that integration, where available.
  1. 01

    Tell us your markets

Where you sell, the methods customers expect and your volumes.

  2. 02

    Providers confirmed

We confirm which providers, methods and settlement options are available for your business.

  3. 03

    Integrate once

One request pattern and one webhook stream, tested in the sandbox.

  4. 04

    Go live, then expand

Adding or switching a provider needs no change to your code.
