IMPS Transaction Pending: What It Means and When Your Money Comes Back

IMPS is meant to be instant, so a transfer stuck on pending, or one that shows successful while the recipient sees nothing, is worrying. What pending means for an IMPS transfer, why it happens, RBI's next-day deadline for getting your money back, how to check the status with NPCI and your bank, and why you shouldn't send it again.

IMPS (Immediate Payment Service) moves money between bank accounts in seconds, round the clock, holidays included. So when a transfer shows "pending" or "under process", or your bank says it went through but the person you paid can't see it, it feels like something has gone badly wrong. Usually it hasn't. The money is either about to arrive or about to come back, and there's a firm deadline for it.

This guide explains what's happening and what to do, using the rules RBI and NPCI publish for IMPS.

What "pending" means for an IMPS transfer

A pending IMPS transfer is one where your bank has sent the instruction but hasn't yet received a final answer from the recipient's bank. Your account may already be debited. The transfer will end one of two ways: the recipient's account is credited, or the credit fails and your debit is reversed.

IMPS statuses and what they mean
StatusYour moneyThe recipient
SuccessfulDebitedCredited, or about to see the credit
Pending or under processPossibly debitedNot known yet
FailedNot debited, or debit to be reversedNot credited
ReversedReturned to youNot credited

Why IMPS transfers go pending

IMPS depends on two banks and NPCI answering each other within seconds. A pending status usually means one of them didn't:

  • The recipient's bank was slow or briefly unavailable, so your bank didn't get confirmation of the credit.
  • Your own bank's systems had a delay after debiting you.
  • The recipient's account couldn't be credited straight away, for example because it's frozen, closed or restricted. These usually end as failures with a reversal.

Wrong account details usually make a transfer fail rather than go pending. If you typed one digit wrong and the account exists, though, the transfer can succeed to someone else, which is why checking the beneficiary's name before sending matters.

RBI's deadline: T + 1

RBI's rules on failed transactions set a firm deadline for IMPS. If your account was debited but the beneficiary's account wasn't credited, your money must be back by the day after the transaction (T + 1, where T is the day you sent it). If it's later than that, your bank must pay you ₹100 for each day of delay, without you having to ask.

What to do, step by step

Work through these in order:

  1. Check whether you were debited, in your bank SMS or statement.
  2. Note the transfer's reference number. For IMPS it's usually a 12-digit reference (RRN), sometimes shown as a UTR or transaction ID. Our guide to UTR and RRN numbers shows where to find it.
  3. Ask the recipient to check their account and SMS. A credit can arrive a little after the status updates.
  4. Check the status again in your banking app after a few minutes.
  5. If it's still unresolved, you can check the transaction's status and register a complaint on NPCI's complaint page, which accepts IMPS complaints with the 12-digit reference; NPCI passes it to your bank, which is responsible for resolving it.
  6. Raise a complaint with your bank directly, too; NPCI's FAQs say IMPS complaints are logged with your bank.
  7. If the money isn't back after T + 1 and your bank doesn't resolve your complaint within 30 days, take it to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.

"Successful" but the recipient hasn't received it

If your bank shows the IMPS transfer as successful, the recipient's bank confirmed the credit. When the recipient still can't see it, the usual reasons are on their side: they're checking a different account, their statement hasn't refreshed, or the narration doesn't look like what they expect.

  • Send them the reference number, amount, date and time, and the account number you paid (masked).
  • Ask them to quote the reference to their bank, which can find the credit with it.
  • Check the account number and IFSC you used. If they were wrong but valid, the money went to another account, and you need to contact your bank immediately.

Pending IMPS compared with other transfers

Every rail has a pending state, but the deadlines differ:

What happens when a bank transfer can't be credited
RailNormal speedIf the credit fails
IMPSInstantReversed by T + 1; ₹100 a day after that
UPI to a personInstantReversed by T + 1; ₹100 a day after that
NEFTWithin 2 hours of the batchReturned within 2 hours of the batch; penal interest if late
RTGSWithin 30 minutesReturned within 1 hour; compensation if late

If your transfer failed outright rather than staying pending, our bank transfer failed guide walks through every case across IMPS, NEFT and RTGS. For a UPI payment stuck on pending, see UPI payment pending.

Avoiding stuck transfers

A few habits help:

  • Check the recipient's name before sending, wherever your bank shows it.
  • Save regular payees as beneficiaries so you don't retype account numbers.
  • For large or important transfers, RTGS (₹2 lakh and above) or NEFT may suit better than IMPS, which has a ₹5 lakh per-transaction limit. Our comparison of IMPS, NEFT and RTGS helps you choose.
  • If you send many payments for a business, a payout system that tracks every transfer's status helps; our guide to payouts stuck in pending covers the business side.

Frequently asked questions

How long can an IMPS transaction stay pending?

Most resolve within minutes. If the recipient isn't credited, RBI's rules require your bank to reverse the debit by the next day (T + 1) and to pay you ₹100 for each day after that.

Can I cancel a pending IMPS transfer?

No. NPCI's FAQs say an IMPS payment can't be stopped or cancelled once it's initiated. Wait for it to succeed or be reversed.

Where can I check my IMPS transaction status?

In your bank's app or with its customer care, and on NPCI's complaint page, which lets you check an IMPS transaction's status and register a complaint with the 12-digit reference number.

IMPS shows successful but money not received. What should I do?

Share the reference number, amount, date and time with the recipient, so their bank can trace the credit. Check the account details you used; if they were wrong but valid, contact your bank at once.

Who do I complain to about an IMPS transaction?

Your bank first; NPCI's FAQs say IMPS complaints are logged with your bank. You can also register through NPCI's complaint page, which forwards it to your bank. If it isn't resolved within 30 days, go to the RBI Ombudsman.
